How it works

Your guided learning pathway

We asked Nicholas to break down 10 techniques that have had the biggest impact on his playing. Now, he's pulling back the curtain on exactly how he learned them and incorporates them in is daily routine as a prominent LA-based touring guitarist.

The Chord Quake and Sliding Chords

When it comes to rhythm guitar, dynamics are king. You'll start the class with two chordal techniques that will add movement to your progressions.

If you're used to playing chords the same way throughout an entire song, these two techniques will make a fantastic addition to  your toolbox.

Lenny Breau Waterfall Harmonics

Ever played a harmonic at the 12th fret of the guitar? It's a beautiful sound that makes for a perfect "ornament" on your playing.

In this lesson, Nicholas will teach you how to play cascading harmonics anywhere on your fretboard.

Introduction to Classical Tremolo

In Day 3, you'll learn a classical guitar technique that will allow you to create the illusion of an infinitely-sustaining note.

This fingerpicking technique will open up a unique new sound in your vocabulary.

Day 4. Trem Bar 101 (Whammy)

Who doesn't love a good vibrato effect? A whammy bar is a great tool that enables you to create movement in lead and rhythm guitar parts. This iconic effect is a must-learn for any electric guitarist.

Day 5. How to Slide Without a Slide

Playing slide guitar is hard – like, really hard. If you want the sweet sound of slide without the pain of learning how to use one, look no further. Today, you'll learn how to mimic the sound of an expressive slide guitar.

Day 6. Nicholas’ Acoustic Toolkit

When it comes to tonal versatility, we often look to the electric guitar. However, the humble acoustic guitar has a lot of variety to offer as well. In this lesson you'll learn how to access different tones with your acoustic.

Day 7. Music Theory: Secondary Dominants & Diminished Chords

Learn how to add movement to your chord progressions by manufacturing tension and resolution with two quick chordal music theory concepts that'll spice up your songwriting in a jiffy.

Day 8. Supercharge Your Playing With Open Strings

Adding open strings to chords is a great way to create rich rhythm guitar sounds and fill out sonic space in a song. Today, Nicholas will walk you through some of his favorite open-string chord voicings.

Day 9. Introduction to Hybrid Picking

Learn the fundamentals of an advanced picking technique that'll allow you to access the best of both worlds between fingerpicking and a pick. Hybrid picking is a versatile technique that you can use in a ton of genres.

Day 10. Introduction to Voice Leading

Voice leading is a pianistic way of playing chords where each note moves to the nearest possible note of the next chord. This technique will help you smooth out your progressions and create dynamic chord melodies.
