How it works

Your guided learning pathway

In this four-part Master Class, you'll learn the mechanics of bebop scales and logic-based chromaticism.

Etudes and Vocabulary

This ain't beginner jazz!

To kick things off, you’ll dive straight into four advanced original etudes over iconic jazz-standard chord progressions.

Connecting Chords With Descending Bebop Scales

In Part II, Cecil will teach you the logic behind bebop chromaticism. This section pulls the curtain back on the vocabulary and scales you used in Part I's etudes.

Connecting Chords With Ascending Arpeggios

In this section, you’ll learn how to play ascending arpeggio lines that outline the same common chord progressions you studied in Part II.

Part IV. Advanced Concepts

In this section, you'll explore advanced bebop concepts to add complexity and color to your playing.

10 Advanced II-V-I Licks

In this Licks Package, Cecil will break down 10 advanced jazz licks for a II-V-I progression so you can quickly build up your improvisational vocabulary.

10 Must-know Bebop Licks

Keep building out your soloing toolkit with 10 bebop licks for a II-V-I progression.

Interlude: How to Break Out of Playing Plateaus

As a bonus, Cecil shares his advice for breaking out of playing plateaus when you feel uninspired.

4-week Plan

Part I. Etudes and Vocabulary

Get a jam-ready jumpstart into bebop with four advanced etudes crafted by Cecil.

Etudes are a great way to contextualize melodic ideas and licks. Taking the time to learn a full etude is an effective way to get a practical understanding of the concepts Cecil will introduce in later sections of the class.

You'll learn different ways to enclose notes, simplify harmony, play melodic motifs through changes, and break up rhythm.

Part II. Connecting Chords With Descending Bebop Scales

Strap on your theory cap, it's time to learn the logic behind bebop chromaticism.

In this section, Cecil isolates the most common chord changes you'll find in jazz and teaches you how to play bebop scales over them.

Beginner jazz guitarists often fall into the trap of playing chromatic notes at whim to sound jazzy. Cecil walks you through a detailed and methodical approach to chromatic playing so you don't fall into this trap.

Before moving onto Part II, Cecil addresses how to play "fast". There are multiple factors that determine how fast you can play. Cecil always encourages his students to develop the ability to sing what they play.

Part III. Connecting Chords With Ascending Arpeggios

In this section you'll continue working on essential scales and vocabulary.

Here, Cecil will break down how to play ascending arpeggio lines that outline the same common chord progressions you studied in Part II.

Part IV. Advanced Concepts

Add complexity and color to your playing.

In this section, we'll explore advanced concepts: chromaticism, melodic cells, triads and voice leading. These are the exact techniques Cecil used in his Etudes from Part I, so you should have some familiarity with them.

In addition to the class Cecil put together two lick packages: 10 Advanced II-V-I Licks and 10 Must-know Bebop Licks.

In a final interlude, Cecil shares his advice for breaking out of playing plateaus when you feel uninspired.

Wrap up the class with bebop listening recommendations, a selection of stellar tunes that Cecil recommends checking out.
