How it works

Your guided learning experience

This challenge is designed to get you up to speed in the art of twang so you can build a base for hybrid picking and adapt it to the sounds of country guitar. Each day, you’ll learn a new skill, practice it in-depth with guided exercises, and tie it all together with an interactive jam.

Hybrid picking

While it’s not the only ingredient, hybrid picking is the secret sauce that defines chicken pickin'.

To kick off the challenge, Matheus will run you through essential hybrid picking exercises so you can build a base for your chicken pickin' skills.

Banjo rolls

Next, you'll start capturing the sound of stringed instruments from the country tradition.

In this lesson, you'll bring a banjo-inspired sparkle to your playing with banjo rolls. This will elevate your rhythm and add exciting movement to your country licks.

Open strings

Unleash the power of open strings to create the iconic country note clashes and ringing textures that add character to your playing.

This lesson explores how to blend open strings with fretted notes for a rich, resonant sound that brings your chicken pickin’ to life.

Days 4-7. Put some twang on that thang

Throughout the next four lessons, you'll continue to build up your chicken pickin' foundation through step-by-step lessons, guided exercises, and interactive jams.

- Day 4. Double stops: Create rich, harmonized melodies using 3rds and 6ths.

- Day 5. Pedal-steel licks: Recreate pedal-steel magic with expressive bends.

- Day 6. Lap-steel licks: Add lap-steel flavor with sliding 6th intervals.

- Day 7. Advanced combos: Combine all six techniques for standout chicken pickin’.

Performance pieces

To cap off the course, you'll take what you learned and apply it in a purely musical context by learning solos crafted by Matheus that incorporate the techniques you worked on throughout the class.

7-Day Plan

Day 1. Hybrid picking

Start with the foundation of chicken pickin'.

What you need to know to get started:

Wondering if you're ready for this class? You don't need to be a master of soloing, but a few core skills will go a long way. Before starting, you should be comfortable with:
- The fundamentals of bending, hammer-ons, pull-offs, slides, and vibrato.
- The basics of pentatonic scale soloing.
- The basics of the Mixolydian mode.

The first lesson:

Hybrid picking sits at the core of the chicken pickin’ sound. To kick off the challenge, you’ll get a hybrid picking intensive that’ll set you up for success in country guitar and beyond.

Learning this technique will enable you to easily switch between regular picking and fingerpicking,
add more snap to your notes via your fingers, and give you access to complex bending and double-stop lines with greater ease.

Days 2, 5, and 6. Copycat country

Capture the sound of classic country stringed instruments.

Imitation is the greatest form of flattery, and boy do country guitarists love being copycats – specifically, you'll hear them mimic the banjo, pedal steel, and the lap steel all the time.

In Day 2, you’ll master banjo rolls for rhythmic, cascading lines. In Day 5, you’ll explore pedal-steel bends for expressive, vocal-like phrases, and in Day 6, you’ll add lap-steel-inspired sliding intervals to your repertoire.

Days 3 & 4. Open strings and double stops

Add two more iconic country sounds to your repertoire.

In these lessons, you’ll dive into techniques that add depth and harmony to your playing, from creating ringing textures with open strings to crafting rich, soulful melodies with double stops.

In Day 3, you'll learn how to incorporate open strings into your playing to create the iconic note clashes and ringing textures that define country guitar. This technique adds depth and character to your licks, giving them a classic, twangy edge.

Then, in Day 4, you'll explore the power of double stops to harmonize your melodies with rich intervals like 3rds and 6ths. These harmonized lines are a staple of country guitar and will add a soulful, dynamic quality to your playing.

Day 7 & Performances

Finish off your chicken pickin' intensive.

To cap off the class, we'll take a day to combine everything you've learned with advanced combos that'll put your skills to the test.

Then, before we part ways, Matheus has prepared three performance pieces for you. These are songs that were specifically composed to include techniques you worked on throughout the class. They're a great way to make sure you’re comfortable with everything you'll have learned.
