How it works

Your guided learning pathway

In this five-part Master Class, Evan will guide you through the fundamentals of classical guitar. The curriculum was crafted by our team of master's-level musicians to give you the best possible pathway for learning classical. No matter your style, there's truly something for everyone here.

Classical Guitar Fundamentals

Before you start playing, it’s important to get set up for success.

To kick off the class Evan, will break down the basic tools and tenets of classical guitar.

Picking-Hand Technique

Next, we'll shine a spotlight on your plucking hand.

In this section, you'll tackle arpeggio patterns, learn string crossing, and develop finger independence.

Fretting-Hand Technique

Once you hone your picking hand, Evan will run you through a series of drills to hone your hand placement, help you easily traverse your fingerboard, and work on playing with a light touch.

Part IV. Coordinating Hands

Once you lock in your new picking and fretting foundation, you'll work on combining both elements. In this section, you'll learn how to make your hands move together gracefully so that your playing feels fluid and effortless.

Part V. SongSquad

Finally, we'll challenge you to learn four classical etudes by Evan that tie together everything you've learned. These beautiful compositions are an absolute joy to learn – interactive TAB and lesson breakdowns included for each SongSquad.

3-week Plan

Part I. Classical Guitar Fundamentals

Study the basic tenets of classical guitar and apply them to your unique style.

In Part I, Evan breaks down the basic tools and ideas that go into classical guitar. You’ll learn about proper posture, nails, sound, and which guitar you need to get started. The good news is that you don’t need to run out and buy an expensive nylon-string guitar to take this class. The lessons can be played on electric and acoustic guitar.

Part II. Right-Hand Technique

Get your your picking hand set up for success.

Here, we’re getting to the nitty-gritty. It’s time to take off your shoes and wiggle your toes in the figurative mud of classical picking-hand technique.

You’ll learn how to set up your hand, play common arpeggio patterns, and develop finger independence. If you’re an electric guitarist who plays with a pick, classical picking technique might feel foreign at first. Fortunately, there's not a huge difference in fretting techniques between these two styles.

Part III. Left-Hand Technique

Next, we’ll shift the focus to your fretting hand.

The biggest mistake beginner classical guitarists make is playing with too much tension in their hands. In Part III, we resolve that issue.

The lessons in this section will help you traverse the fretboard with ease and play with a light touch (valuable skills for guitarists in any style)! After a fun interlude lesson on Evan’s favorite chromatic warmup exercise, we’ll move on.

Parts IV. & V.

These final two sections are all about coordinating your plucking and fretting hands.

Part IV. Coordinating Hands

In Part IV, we’ll tie everything you learned together with lessons and exercises that combine both hands.

First, you’ll learn how to prepare your plucking-hand fingers for each note they play with a series of exercises that get progressively more difficult. Then, Evan introduces legato string crossing and dynamics into the equation.

Part V. SongSquad

Finally, we’ll wrap up with four original compositions by Evan (called SongSquads) for you to learn. These songs tie together concepts from the previous sections of the class. There's even a bonus lesson on a flamenco guitar technique called extensor rasgueado!
