This advanced course will help you make strides as a lead guitarist and break out of any soloing ruts you're stuck in. Rosie will guide you through a simple approach to hearing, singing, & playing your way through the major, minor, & dominant worlds of sound while showing you how to apply a soulful & melodic approach to your existing soloing skills.

No boring lectures to sit through in this class!
To kick things off, we'll get you right into soloing. This lesson will re-affirm some important scales you’ll use throughout the Master Class and help you start thinking like an accomplished improviser.

Next, we'll jump into three days of fretboard exploration where you’ll dive deep into specific tonal environments: major, minor, and dominant.
Each day, you'll learn a scale, arpeggio, and lick to contextualize Rosie's lesson – then you'll cap it all off with an interactive jam session 🤘

The next three days are about bridging the gap between what your ears are hearing and what your hands are playing by singing.
Don't worry! You don't need the voice of an angel to benefit from these lessons.
Rosie will walk you, step by step, through a simple process to connect your ear to your instrument. The results will blow your mind.
Put everything you’ve absorbed from this Master Class into context by examin and learning how to solo over one of Rosie’s original tunes: Better Days.
Soul-jazz legend George Benson is particularly famous for singing and playing his solos. He’s a great example of how the singing, hearing, and playing approach can lead to authenticity in your soloing. Today, you'll explore his tune Affirmation.
Your turn! Review what you've learned, then take a few techniques from this Master Class and conjure up your own melodic jazz solo.
Day 1. Start soloing today
Jump feet first into the jazz-soloing pool
Today, you'll get right into the thick of it by jamming over a II-V-I progression with Rosie. You'll get acquainted with melodic soloing via two easy-to-grasp concepts: licks and improvisation. True melodic magic is achieved by combining both approaches into something only you could conceive of.
Days 2-4. Fretboard focus
Strap on your jazz'n cap – it's time for fretboard explorations.
Days 2. Major scale – Fretboard focus
The major scale?! Boring right? Wrong! It's the center of the Western music theory universe, and you need to know it better than Facebook knows your internet browsing habits. Rosie will guide you through scales, arpeggios, patterns, and a lick to show you how to get the most out of this staple skill. Then, you'll jam out with here over a backing track.
Day 3. Minor scale – Fretboard focus
Today, we'll take our fretboard focus onto another tonality – C minor. This material is the minor mirror of Day 2 – you’ll notice how your preparation and exercises walk a similar, although darker-sounding, path. As always, you'll crystallize your new melodic learnings with a tasty interactive jam.
Day 4. Dominant scale – Fretboard focus
Today you’ll get some perspective on the last of the big three tonal centers – the dominant sound. This funky and soulful tonality is an improvisational must-know. Used in neo-soul, blues, jam bands, avant-jazz, funk, & more, this vocabulary is going to serve you far beyond the world of jazz guitar.
Days 5 - 7. Singing, hearing, playing
Connect your ear to your instrument.
Day 5. Minor pentatonic – Singing, hearing, playing
The next three days are about bridging the gap between what your ears are hearing and what your hands are playing by singing. Comfort is key here. You don’t need to be a star singer – the goal is to merge your hearing & playing skills. We'll kick things off with minor pentatonic sounds.
Day 6. Major pentatonic – Singing, hearing, playing
Today, you’ll build up your melodic confidence by singing, hearing, and playing some major tonalities so you can internalize the sweetly-melancholic major 7th sounds. There's a huge advantage to being able to come up with melodic ideas away from your instrument. Before you know it, these three steps will feel like second nature.
Day 7. Dominant – Singing, hearing, playing
Calling all melodic masterminds. Only one more sound world to cover with this intuitive singing, hearing, and playing process – dominant and suspended tonalities. Covering all these different tonalites in isolation is great for developing your ear. It’ll help you get in touch with your vocal range and how it relates to the guitar while expanding your overall tonal awareness.
Days 8-10
Cap off the class with solos by Rosie and George Benson, then craft one of your own.
Day 8. How to solo on Better Days
Now you’ll get a chance to put everything you’ve absorbed from this Master Class so far into context. The first song we’ll examine is one of Rosie’s originals – Better Days. Our focus today will revolve around improvising over the chorus section.
Day 9. How to solo on Affirmation
Soul-jazz legend George Benson is particularly famous for singing and playing his solos. It’s in no small way responsible for his lines' melodic and hooky qualities. Today, you'll use all of your Master Class skills to tackle this song's soulful progression.
Day 10. Write a solo challenge & recap
Review what you learned, then dive into your final challenge: craft your own melodic jazz solo over George Benson's Affirmation.

Are you a guitar, bass or piano player who feels like you haven’t made progress in a few months… years… or even decades?
You’re probably stuck in what’s called the ‘intermediate plateau’. This is very common and can be very frustrating.
What’s the cause? Well, it’s pretty easy to learn the basics on any instrument. Learn a few chords and you can play hundreds of other songs. Learn a couple of scales and you can play some lead.
But what then? Triads? Modes? Arpeggios? The phrygian scale?!
Without a clear plan and learning system you fall back to playing the same things over and over again. Or you bounce around free lessons online but nothing seems to stick. It’s a recipe for a lot of practice without much progress.
That’s where Pickup Music can help. We specialize in taking players stuck in a rut and turning them into advanced musicians.
We do this through Learning Pathways that take you on a step-by-step journey towards mastery. We give you a highly structured system that shows you exactly what to work on each week to make serious progress.
These Learning Pathways take the guesswork out of your practice routine. You are guided through a proven grade-by-grade system with daily lessons, play-along practice exercises and interactive workouts.
But it’s not all about theory. We apply everything you learn to real music. That’s why every grade of our Learning Pathways build up to performing a song with a live backing band. This simulates what it’s like to play a real gig, with real musicians. It’s the absolute best way to learn.
You can also get 1-on-1 video feedback on your playing from our expert coaches and can attend weekly live lessons. This personal feedback makes Pickup Music the closest thing to taking in-person lessons, but at a fraction of the cost.
So does this method actually work? Will you see results in your playing?
The most common thing we hear from new members is that they’ve made more progress with Pickup Music in a few months than in years of teaching themselves. As one member recently told us, “I'm finally seeing progress for the first time in many years”.

Private music lessons cost about $50 per lesson or $2,600 a year.
Enrolling in a music academy costs about $40,000 a year.
A Pickup Music membership costs just $180 for the whole year. That works out to 50 cents a day!
But it’s not just about the money. It’s about not wasting your precious time. It’s about making actual progress as a musician.
By following our proven Learning Pathway system, you will eliminate the guesswork so you know exactly what you need to focus on each day and week to make lasting progress as a musician.
Most online music lesson sites are good at teaching one-off songs. Or they get super famous artist to record one-hour video lessons talking at length about their particular style and career.
The problem is that these 'infotainment' approaches don't stick. They don’t help you to actually get better as a musician. You can waste a lot of time bouncing around these types of unconnected, one-off lessons.
Pickup Music takes a different approach. We give you a highly structured system that shows you exactly what to work on each week to make serious progress. We take you beyond the basics through a step-by-step journey towards mastery.
By following a Pickup Music Learning Pathway, you are getting the most guided way to learn music. Over 6 grades, you are taken through daily lessons and practice exercises that carefully explain what’s going on behind the music.
Each grade then builds up to song performances that apply everything you’ve learned with a live backing band. These challenges - where we simulate what it’s like to play a real gig, with real musicians - is the absolute best way to learn.
You can also get 1-on-1 video feedback on your playing and weekly live lessons. This personal feedback makes Pickup Music the closest thing to taking in-person lessons, but at a fraction of the cost.
