How it works

Your guided learning pathway

In this focused three-part Master Class, you'll learn how to craft your own modern jazz sound using advanced theory and Ben's signature legato technique. You'll leave this class with a brand-new set of tools that you can blend into your own unique style.

Technique & Ideas

We'll kick off the class by building out your lead-guitar vocabulary with two-string arpeggios and scales broken up into different intervals.

You’ll be able to integrate these concepts into your own playing style right away – even if you're not strictly interested in jazz guitar.

Harmonic Concepts

Next, Ben will introduce you to the complex harmonic concepts that fuel his playing style.

In this section, you'll learn how to integrate advanced altered sounds with fundamental concepts like scales, arpeggios.

Songs & Studies

To cap off the class, you'll use original songs by Ben as case studies to take what you learned and put it into a purely musical context.

These compositions are a great way to gain insight into how Ben composes music.

Take it further

Once you master Ben's approach to jazz, get ready to take your lead guitar skills even further with mind-melting bebop licks in Cecil Alexander's Master Class Advanced Jazz Improvisation.

3-week Plan

Part I. Technique & Ideas

Build out your improvisational vocabulary.

In this section, you'll learn the melodic framework that Ben uses in his lead guitar playing. We'll start with basic concepts relating to scales, arpeggios, and intervals and build up from there.

Ben will show you how to play arpeggios using two notes per string. He'll also demonstrate how to break up scales in 3rds, 4ths, and other intervals. You’ll be able to integrate these concepts into your own playing style right away.

Part II. Harmonic Concepts

Learn how to incorporate advanced altered sounds in your playing.

This section will introduce you to advanced altered harmony and how to play "outside". These concepts will help you become a better storytelling improviser by introducing tension and release into your lines. Ben will also teach you how to use harmonic superimposition by implying chord changes over an existing  set of chords.

Part III. Songs & Studies

Apply what you've learned to a music context.

In Part III. you'll study a collection of songs and studies Ben wrote just for this Master Class. These compositions combine elements of everything we've covered so far and are a great way to start putting the previous lessons into a musical context.
