How it works

Your guided learning pathway

In this three-part Master Class, you'll learn how to quickly spice up your playing with neo soul-infused rhythm guitar concepts and an arpeggio-based approach to improvising.

Technique

We'll start the class with a series of musical exercises that will help you incorporate a timeless neo-soul and R&B sound in your playing.

How to Break out of the Box

Next, we'll focus on how you can use arpeggios to break out of pentatonic boxes that trap so many intermediate guitarists. This section will do wonders for your soloing.

SongSquad

We'll wrap up the class with nine songs that Nicholas composed just for this class.

For each song, he'll break down his approach to creating it so you can use the concepts to fuel your own playing.

Take it further

Ready for more? Nicholas recently dropped another class that'll take your playing even further! Check out his newest Master Class 10 Techniques in 10 Days.

3-week Plan

Part I. Technique

Kick off the class by hitting the gym with fretting- and picking-hand workouts.

This section focuses on techniques that will help you incorporate a timeless neo-soul and R&B sound in your playing. We'll cover three important techniques: chord quakes, pinky warm-ups and waterfall harmonics. At the end of this section, Nicholas breaks down how to practice guitar effectively so that you stay motivated and make as many gains as possible.

Part II. How to Break out of the Box

Unlock your fretboard with arpeggios.

Nicholas will demonstrate an easy arpeggio and show you how to get the most mileage out of it with chromatic approach tones. Then, you'll learn three-octave arpeggios and how to create a totally new sound by changing only one note of an arpeggio.

This section includes an interlude about how to become better at soloing. Nicholas walks you through some of the tools used in storytelling and how they can be applied to scales, chords, and arpeggios to help tell a captivating musical story.

Part III. SongSquad

Put your new skills to work!

In this section, you'll learn nine tunes composed by Nicholas for this class. They incorporate many of the concepts you've learned throughout this Master Class. Taking someone else’s concepts, licks or ideas and making them your own will give you a toolbox of techniques and concepts to draw from.
